Abhirami pairs with Surya
Annalashmi alias Abhirami, is banking heavily on Virumandi which is due on Pongal day. Although she has the right mix of looks and talent she was not getting the right kind of break. She then did few films in Kannada and Malayalam. Her recent film Rakthakaneeru with Upendra was a hit in Kannada. With Virumandi Kamal has brought her back in circulation in Tamil. Sources close to her say that she has been chosen to play the female lead opposite Surya in Goutham Menon’s next film.

Vijaykanth's Next
In Vijaykanth’s next film Engal Anna he plays a bachelor in his forties. Sidique, who has directed the Tamil hit film Friends directs this film, which is the remake of the Malyalam movie Chronic Bachelor. The film has a big array of stars ranging from Prabhu Deva, Pandiarajan, Anandraj and Swarnamalya. Namitha, an admired heroine of Telugu films debuts as the heroine in Engal Anna. The film is produced by Sudhish, the brother in law of Vijaykanth and is slated for Pongal release.

Devyani's hubby directs Telugu film
Raj Kumaran - husband of heroine Devyani is to direct a Telugu film featuring Sai Kumar and Devyani. Raj Kumaran made his debut with Tamil film Nee Varuvaya starring Parthibhan, Ajith and Devyani. It was an average hit. He directed two more films in Tamil. All of them had Devyani as heroine. Later on after marriage Devyani turned producer and hubby directed a Tamil film, which bombed. Sai Kumar after Police story release 7 years back has no hit. He is hoping for a break with Rajakumaran film. N Sai Ratnam who buys dubbing films and also produced 3 films produces this film. This film started its shooting on December 20th and would be completed by January 31st of January 2004.

Karunas mocks Vikram
Pop singer-turned-comedian Karunas is all excited about this role he's playing in the new Tamil film, 'Ennavo Pudichirukku'. He's playing 'Peela Magan'. A naughty take-off on Vikram's character Chithan of 'Pithamagan', Karunas comes in the same get-up, and is sure it would make the audience roll with laughter. But what about the reactions of Bala and Vikram? "I just want to get mileage out of it. My intention is not to hurt anyone!" says Karunas. He does add, "Anyway, I did inform them about it before I started shooting."

Jasmin losing fragrance
She was once the toast of the town, and this was in the very recent past. But now there are very few takers for this screen charmer, as far as the Tamil film scene is concerned. Meera Jasmin, with just two films, 'Run' and 'Bala', caught the fancy of the audience and Tamil film-makers.

But came two more films - 'Puthiya Geethai' and the Ajit-starrer 'Anjeneya'. Not only did the films flop, they showcased her in very poor light too. Now she has just one film with Srikant and, of course, the one with Maniratnam. But the scene is entirely different in Kerala where Jasmin has the pick of roles, with almost all the top film-makers, the arty ones and the commercial film-makers, signing her up.

Surya does a double
After his performance in films like 'Kakka Kakka', Surya is being taken seriously as an actor by film-makers. The film he's been signing recently are ones that give him challenging roles. Like AVM's 166th film has Surya as the hero. A remake of the Dilip-starrer 'Kunjikoonam', the film has Surya playing a dual role. One, typical-hero, and the other, an ugly hunchback. With Surya's new-found confidence and his ability to get into any role, the actor should have no problem playing both!

A costly miss
Avid film-goers will remember the well-shot scenes of the song on a train in 'Jayam'. Of the camera angles used in covering the entire set which replicated a market-place and a mechanic shop in the Vijay-starrrer 'Thirumalai'. The man behind the lens was cameraman Rathnavelu. Happy that the films he worked for like 'Sethu', 'Nanda', 'Jayam' and 'Thirumalai' have all proved box-office successes, Rathnavelu, however, has one regret. He missed out on 'Pithamagan' because of clash of dates. Now the cinematographer is busy with some films in Telugu too, "but I still regret losing out on Pithamagan", says Rathnavelu.

Sneha to act as blind
Sneha is practising playing blind these days. The talented and good-looking actress, with her winning smile, is playing the role of a blind girl in her new film, titled 'Athu'. Getting into the skin of the character, the actress reportedly is practising walking around her house with eyes closed. Sneha has always done her part well, whatever the fate of the movie. But, surprisingly, there are not many takers for this screen charmer. Her role in 'Athu' might well turn the fortunes in her favour!
